The Majatica Jazz Festival was essentially born from two different project experiences that came together. The first is that of a permanent artistic residency between performance and contemporary improvisation and the second is the need to interpret places through their sound system with a synesthetic approach. Sounds as metaphors of vision within a time frame are compared with the codes of art and the power of nature.
Our history
Majatica Jazz Festival, born in 2017, takes its name from the olive tree that grows on the hills of Ferrandina to promote its knowledge and make people appreciate its qualities, together with the historical and landscape beauties of the area.
The festival is an opportunity to host the great artists of the Italian jazz scene and beyond, in close connection with moments of knowledge and tasting of the majatica extra virgin olive oil and the delicious baked black olives of Ferrandina, a Slow Food presidium.
Goals
The general objective of the project is to support and encourage the promotion of cultural initiatives to valorise the local area and the Majatica olive through the creation of a network of joint actions and integrated cultural events that aim to discover, rediscover and valorise natural and cultural resources of the territory.
The specific objective is to develop integration and dialogue between artists, local cultural and economic operators, in order to recognize and entrust the "enhancement of the cultural heritage" of the City as a driving force for the development of the tourist economy and as a source of attraction for tourists, visitors and jazz music enthusiasts.
Aggregating artistic realities, areas of typical craftsmanship and local agricultural production will be a privileged strategy to guarantee a competitive repositioning and ensure the right visibility of the city of Ferrandina, with its environmental and cultural resources, on the provincial, regional and national tourist market and context.
The creation of a major event such as "Majatica jazz festival" becomes, from this perspective, the ideal tool for achieving these objectives.
Geographic Location
The festival takes place in the week before August 15th in Basilicata, in the city of Ferrandina, located on a hill overlooking the Basento valley, surrounded by hills with olive groves, from which the famous extra virgin olive oil of Majatica and the tasty black olives are obtained bake. The first written testimonies on the baked olives produced in Ferrandina date back to 1700; but the cultivation of the olive tree has even more remote origins, as evidenced by the Patriarca olive tree and the 4th century oil mill. to. C, found during the FArch excavation campaign, conducted by Unibas. The Majatica jazz festival, which bears the name of the olive tree symbol of Ferrandina, was born with the aim of bringing jazz music closer not only to fans of the genre, but also to those who are ready to be intrigued by the relationship between music, art, landscapes and millenary traditional flavours.
